Risa played a starring role in the Web Series turned Feature Film "HomeCooked News."
Risa Benson is a charasmatic, upbeat, and dedicated actress living in NYC. She grew up on Long Island and immersed herself into college life, which included musicals, plays, theater club, cheerleading and sorority. While attending Hofstra University, she would take the train into Manhattan to audition for tv, film and theater. One experience to note: after six callbacks, yes six, Risa was offered 2nd choice for the female lead role in a Broadway Musical, (which later that year, won the Tony Award for Best Musical). The 1st choice for the role happened to have been contracted with Joseph Papp for Shakespeare in the Park. If Mr. Papp let the actress out of her contract then she got the Broadway role, if not, Risa would land her first Broadway leading role. Mr. Papp let the other actress out of her contractual obligation. This experience ended up being Risa's second hard lesson as an actress. The first was, after auditioning for and being offered the lead role in a feature film by director Richard Baskin, (a life-changing opportunity) the producers of the film decided to cast one of their own daughter's instead. (Risa still has Mr. Baskin's apology letter.)
Risa graduated with a BA in Drama and a minor in Speech Arts from Hofstra University.
She moved to Manhattan right after college to continue her studies and be where the bookings were. She studied at HB Studios with Stephen Strimpell and took numerous workshops and classes with accomplished teachers, casting directors and actors. Risa also studied with Brian Reise in Los Angeles. She believes that there is never an end to studying this craft, only continued growth. She is currently studying with the wonderful Anthony Grasso.
Risa's studies have given her foundational training in On-Camera Technique, Scene Study, Character Development, Improv, Audition Technique, Commercials and Voice and Movement. She has further honed her craft while acting in film, tv (live & recorded) and theatre with experienced and well-known artisans.
Her characters range from the confident, formidable Lawyer/Teacher/Mom, to the insecure or overly-trusting Wife, to the sexy Ad Exec or the demanding Mistress, to the sassy, nosy neighbor, or the quirky, comedic, sarcastic, loyal Best Friend...just to name a few.
In addition to acting, Risa is a studied and accomplished singer, dancer, host, and emcee.
A consummate performer, Risa is dedicated and committed to whatever role she is play with sincerity, depth and positivity.
